Lightweight, Travel and Portable Mobility Scooters are designed to be transported. They can be disassembled into a few lighter pieces and/or folded so they can be lifted and placed in the boot of a car.
These are a very popular style of scooter as they can be taken by car to the shopping centre, work, park, or to visit friends and family. They are also a cost-effective option as they lack many of the features of larger models.
If you are considering a trip such as going on a cruise, or to destinations requiring air travel, this type of mobility scooter may just what you’re after.
What to Consider When Buying a Portable Scooter
A Portable Scooter may be a great solution for those with limited mobility, but they have both advantages and drawbacks.
Weight
One of the most important elements to look at when considering a travel scooter is the weight of the heaviest part. Once you disassemble the unit it may need to be lifted in and out of the car. 25kg for example may not sound like much to some, but it will be considered quite heavy for others. Some Support Workers for example may not consider lifting anything that heavy. A hoist can be used as an alternative means for loading, but it does add to the overall cost.
The overall weight may also be a consideration.
Comfort
Portable Scooters are not often designed with comfort as the priority. Weight, size and ease of transporting often take precedence. The seat padding you find on larger models is often replaced with something less comfortable. In this range, everything has a trade-off.
Things you can consider in terms of comfort are the adjustments you can make and the size. An adjustable tiller (steering column) can be beneficial for getting the spacing right. Adjustable armrests for the right positioning of your arms. Leg room if you’re on the taller side, and the width and depth of the seat can all contribute.
Portability
If you’re in the market for a travel scooter, portability will be high on your list of considerations. Is it easy to disassemble and reassemble? How long does the process take? What space does it take up disassembled or folded – very important if considering airline travel? How heavy are all the individual pieces and total weight?
Purpose
Does the scooter suit your intended purpose? For example, are you looking to take it with you when you travel by air or on a cruise? If so, then size does matter and the smaller the better. For example, you’ll need a mobility scooter smaller than the dimensions set out by the airline you’ll be travelling on. We’ve included Virgin below as a reference guide, but if you want to learn more, visit Travelling on Airlines with Mobility Aids.
Maximum Dimensions Table (From Virgin airlines)
Wheelchair/Aircraft | B737 and A320 | F70, F100 | Saab 340B |
---|---|---|---|
Height | 84cm | 65cm | 130cm |
Width | 100cm | 100cm | 85cm |
Length | 125cm | 125cm | 115cm |
Pros
- Lightweight
- Easily Transported
- Small Turning Circle
Cons
- Less Features than larger scooters
- Less Weight Capacity
- Less Maximum Range
